Members of Legislative Assembly are elected using the first-past-the-post system, where the candidate who receives the highest number of votes in a constituency wins the election.

41Who conducts elections in India?+

All national and state elections in India are conducted and supervised by the Election Commission of India, an independent constitutional authority responsible for administering the election process.

42What are auxiliary polling stations?+

Auxiliary polling stations are extra voting locations set up by election officials to supplement the main polling station for the same part of the electorate. They are used when too many voters are assigned to one place, to ease crowding, or for practical access (for example, an additional booth in the same building or compound).

They are regular, official polling points — not informal booths. You must vote only at the polling station and booth number printed on your voter slip or as listed on the Election Commission’s voter search; if your assignment is an auxiliary station, that is your correct place to vote.

When official statistics or BallotView show a total number of polling stations for a constituency, that count usually includes auxiliary stations as separate polling points.
